An overview of Dr. Maria Montessori and her Methods
- Few teaching approaches have attracted more interest over the past 100 years than the methods of the late Dr. Maria Montessori. The Montessori approach has been developed throughout the fascinating life of Maria Montessori; 1870- 1952.
- Maria was an Italian physician who turned to education and stimulation of children in their early years.
- Building on ideas of other famous educators like Edouard Seguin, Jean-Marc-Gaspard Itard, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Johann Pestalozzi, Jobert Owen and Friedrich Froebel to name a few; Maria refined and developed her own methods of nurturing children.
- Through her many years of observing children, she believed that by using hands-on concrete materials and guidance; children actually “learn how to learn”. “In all levels of Montessori programs, teachers need to model the behavior they want the children to imitate”.
- Dr. Montessori developed educational activities to help foster growth in the four main areas of study; practical life, sensorial, mathematics and language.
- The success of Maria’s programs inspired many other educators to adopt her method and carry on her work.
- Early Achievers Educational Centre incorporates many of Maria’s methods into their early learning teaching of young children.
- Early Learning staff of Early Achievers have training in Montessori methods and continue to engaged in extensive training through the NAMC – North American Montessori Centre.
